Texas Blue Buck

Posted on October 15th, 2010 in Albino, Whitetail Deer

Here’s a strange looking beast.  This “Blue” Whitetail Buck was taken on Christmas Eve 2007 in Texas. The best explanation of his color so far is something called Luecism.  Leucism is a condition characterized by reduced pigmentation in animals and humans. Unlike albinism, it is caused by a reduction in all types of skin pigment, not just melanin.

Check out the Albino category on the left for even more wonderful animals that have Albinism — or even a BLACK Whitetail…

Black Bear on a Tight Rope

Posted on October 12th, 2010 in Bear

Looks like this black bear was hungry enough to try a little tight rope crawling.  Isn’t it amazing how creative these animals are?

Don’t forget to check out this warning sign about bears

Bull Reds Schooling off the Coast

Posted on October 8th, 2010 in Fish

Here are some pics of a school of bull reds schooling of the coast.  I didn’t get all the back story on these photos so I don’t know if they are local to Texas or not.  Along the Gulf Coast, particularly Texas Gulf Coast, Redfish are a prized catch.  They usually are caught in the bays along the coast.  The best time for catching the big ones is in the fall as they move into the bays for spawning.  After spawning they head back out to the open water where, apparently, they school up as evidenced by the photos below.

Doe protects her fawn

Posted on August 25th, 2010 in Whitetail Deer

Check out this video of a doe that protects her fawn from some local pets.  Interesting to see the house cat try to mark the fawn with scent.  Mama doe doesn’t take to kindly to it.  The dog receives a nice butt whipping  Sends the cat running, too.
