The LaCrosse Tribune has an interesting story of a buck that tried to battle an Elk. Unfortunately the Elk was a concrete statue. The buck didn’t stand a chance.

Sometimes they have other things in mind when they see a lifelike statue. Check out this moose.

Yearly invasion of Elk in Estes Park, Colorado

Estes Park is a beautiful little town in the foothills of the Colorado Rockies near the entrance of the Rocky Mountains National Park.

Each year the Elk make there way into town and often cause quite the havoc with the tourist. How anyone would think these huge beasts are tame is beyond me.

Big Bear shot Saddle Hills Alberta – Sept 2010

These two gents were calling elk in the Saddle Hills south of working when this big guy slipped in on the caller.

The shooter spotted the bear 8 yards from the caller and dropped him with 5 shots out of his 338 Rem Mag. Farmers in the area knew about the Bear but weren’t able to track after it had killed 3 horses, 5 cows, 13 sheep and a pen full of chickens on several different homesteads in the area.

Fish and wildlife had bear traps set up in the area but notice on surveillance video that when ever a he would enter his hump would hit the top of the culvert trap slowing him enough that the trap door would wack him on the head before he was all the way in check out the scar tissue on his face.

Bear weighed in just under 1300 pounds and would have stood 11 ¾ feet tall on its hind legs.

Saturday “somebody” drove from their house to Estes for a Holiday sale. On my way down the Forest service access road somebody pulled up behind a car with his flashers on and witnessed this most amazing elk migration. He was sorry he didn’t bring my camera….but luckily one of his neighbors’ daughter did and made this recording. There were only 3 or 4 cars at this place at this time. He was lucky to be in one of them!!

As you watch this, you will realize that there is a patch of ice in the middle of the road.

I’m sure these are common sights in and around cities near Elk herds. However, us flatladders are truely amazed by these kind of photos. I’ve seen plenty of Elk roaming the streets of Estes Park, Colorado but, these seem huge!

Carry on fees increased on Frontier Airlines… for Antlers!

Two Bull Elk Antler Locked

I received this email recently. Describes a pretty interesting day at the office.

Here is how my day started yesterday ( 11-29-2007)

Got a call that 2 bull elk were locked up and one was dead the other still alive. The bulls were in a field about 15 miles Northeast of Monticello.

When I got there I actually found 2 bulls locked antlers. I thought this only happened in other areas… J. and I were going to tranquilize the bull and saw antlers. One problem… we did not have enough of the drugs to do a good job. So we walked out there and sawed the one point off of the dead bulls right antler and then we had to saw the main beam of the left antler to get the other bull free. The whale tail was over the bulls eyes, lodged between the eye guards. When we cut it free the bull stood there for awhile catching its breath with the piece of the antler still in it’s antlers. When it took off the piece of antler came out…

WOW! this was for sure one of the most memorable days. Enjoy the pics.
