While this “King Ranch” deer is a great deer, it is no where near as big as is claimed. Tremendous exageration of all features. For example, the spread is claimed to be 34″. O.K. This deer is probably 16″ from the tip of one ear to the other. (Where I hunt they average about 13″) That means that his horns would have to be outside of his ears by 9″ on each side. Looking at the right side you can tell that it is wider than his ears by no more than 3″ or 4″. That would put the spread at 22″ to 24″. Also the claim is that the G-4′s are longer than the drops, but you can clearly see that the drops are longer than the G-4′s. And, it only mentions one drop and there are actually two. I think there’s some hanky-panky going on here. I think this deer would probably break the 200″ mark for a typical but will not net well B&C because of the drops and other oddities. P.S. 228 lbs is not very big for a protein fed whitetail. Average at best. I shot a 41\2 year old eight point two years ago that weighed that much. Daryl

This is a very nice deer, and i would love to see it walk in front of me during deer season, but for a deer to weigh that much in Texas is a little far fetched. I can MAYBE understand if it was fed well within the ranch area, but still seems a little odd for a deer in the south to weigh this much. I could understand if this deer was taken in the northern regions of the country, such as Iowa where nutrients and protein could be found pretty much under every footstep you take. Whitetails just dont grow as big (body wise) as they would in the northern areas.

Theres no way it weighs 228. Look at the body size compared to the dogs. Also the world record typical whitetail was killed by Milo Hanson in 1993 in Saskatchewan Canada and scored 213 5/8. So if this true then we should have new world record if it scores 224 (which it doesnt because everyone in the hunting world would have heard about it). Dont get me wrong this is an awesome buck but not as big as its said to be.

I never saw the part that said anyone actually shot this deer.Which is why its not in the record book and why there is a dog with him in the picture and not a hunter.

This deer is not at all as big as it says. and Scottie Byrd you shouldn’t beleive everything you read. Only Muture deer have approximate 6 inch ears. In the scoring of the gross they did not include the drop tines which clearly shows that this is false or they are not a B&C official scorer. The dog is behind the deer which should make they deer look larger and it does not, This deer might field dress to approximate 165-180 at the most. Most biologist are official scorers and would not score they deer until it is drying period is done. Why is the biologist sending this email? I saw a Kansas deer shot last year that was a 7 by 7 that would score in the low 190′s that was just as big enough bigger

I just added a new post that has a presentation by Eugene R. Fuchs of the Kerr Wildlife Management Area, Texas Parks and Wildlife (www.tpwd.state.tx.us/hillcountry). It outlines how to guestimate the B&C score of a buck while it is still alive and moving around. Check it out.

Daryl Clenney your an idiot 228 pounds is a huge buck for Texas. That deer would score that high and the reason they only mention one droptine is because they are both equally long. I guess your not a Texan because you don’t know much about our deer and you are calling one of the premier Game ranch’s in the country a liar

That buck can not go in the record book because it was shot in texas and there is to much human involment. And any buck can get that size on a ranch because the protein is forced to them!!!!LOOK UP THE HIGH ROLLER BUCK he’s on a ranch
Who going to pay good money to shoot a scrub buck instead of a monster. And MR.biiggerthanthatbuck
put a picture of a deer you shot on or are u full of shit

This is fake. Seriously how many deer have you seen that the ears drooped down to the sides like that. I’ve seen fakes like this before. Yes the rack is impressive but it don’t belong on this deer. Someone did take care to try and cover it up though. The skin and tissue on top of a deer’s head hold the ears upright. These are flopped way down the side of the head. Fake Fake Fake

Everyone is saying its fake, and Texas deer don’t get this big. Has anyone ever been to the King Ranch? They feed the deer down there as much as they feed the cattle, It doesn’t matter where you are, if your feeding deer creep they are going to get over 200lbs at 4 1/2 years of age. Also with all those extra nutes, they are going to grow massive horns. End of story. Though hunting on the king ranch isn’t really a challenge, every 4 or 5 sq. mile of that place has 2-3, 130-140+ buck from there feeding systems. In my opinion USA Wildlife Department needs to control deer farms more. We are turning deer into something thats not natural by genetic selection. They will be tame like bovine before we know it.

The reason for this deer’s big ears, and antler mass, is because it is appears to be a hybrid- a cross between a mule deer, and a whitetail. As an old deer hunter, I’ve seen a lot of both species.

this is a good deer. but everything is a little out of proportion like daryl said. yall are retards for arguing. tats about a 26 inch inside frame 28 at best and only about 12 in g2′s and the deer only weighs around 180 you can tell by the size of its neck

The main reason why the buck is NOT immressive to me is because it was shot in a feeding park. You bigtime southern and midwestern landowners raising and feeding deer and claiming you actually hunt them are disappointing and give real hunters a bad name. What you do for ego boosting and BRAGGING rights has no respect whatsoever. Why don’t you come up to New England sometime where real hunters are proud to drag out a doe or a spike. Texas ranch hunting (shopping) is a joke.

I might throw up from the ignorance of some of the comments here. I’m not going to argue about the specifics on the size of this deer, it’s a beautiful buck, zero argument. As to the idiots that say it was “force fed” protein, yeah you’re right, we get on our horses, rope deer, and plug a tube down their throat and pump food down their stomachs. You can literally watch the horns grow! And for the other haters that say it was some BS pen deer, read up on the history of the King Ranch and tell me that a ranch that size is a “pen”. And to you “realfuckinghunter”, next time you hit the blind, bring a book on grammar with the rest of your supplies. You sound like a total moron.

The info given for this deer is of course, lies. South Texas bucks average around 150 lbs dressed. As far as us Texans “forcing protein” on deer….the South Texas area is nearly desert. Its full of cactus, thorns, rattlesnakes, coyotes, bobcats, etc. The fact that deer survive a summer there is amazing. We feed to try to better the overall health of the ENTIRE herd, not just select bucks. We care very much about hunting and wildlife here. Its some we enjoy with family and friends. Yes, there are the landowners who take things a bit too far, but not EVERY deer you see coming out of Texas is a penned up, protein fed, steriod injected raised deer, most are deer that were passed by hunters at an early age and to grow into its true potential

Sure is a bunch of crap being said about this deer. I say it is one real nice deer. However I have seen larger bucks than this a number of times in the south Texas country and not pen fed deer but wild deer. You folks gritching about this deer. It sounds like sour grapes to me
